UK bed sizes in cm, from small single to emperor

3 min read

A UK bed size is the width and length of the mattress, measured in centimetres or feet and inches. UK sizes run from a 75x190 cm small single to a 200x200 cm emperor, and they differ from US and European sizes. The chart below lists all 7, followed by answers on king, small double, US queen and fitted sheet sizes.

Bed size Mattress (cm) Mattress (feet)
Small single 75 x 190 2ft 6in x 6ft 3in
Single 90 x 190 3ft x 6ft 3in
Small double 120 x 190 4ft x 6ft 3in
Double 135 x 190 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in
King 150 x 200 5ft x 6ft 6in
Super king 180 x 200 6ft x 6ft 6in
Emperor 200 x 200 6ft 6in x 6ft 6in

Emperor is the one size that isn't fixed. Some makers sell it at 200x215 cm or 215x215 cm, so measure your mattress before buying sheets for an emperor bed.

What size is a UK king size bed?

A UK king size bed is 150 cm wide and 200 cm long, or 5ft by 6ft 6in. It's 15 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a double, which gives two adults 75 cm of width each instead of 67.5 cm.

That extra 10 cm of length matters for anyone over about 6ft. A double is 190 cm long, so tall sleepers often hit the footboard on a double and stop doing so on a king.

What is a small double bed in cm?

A small double bed is 120 cm wide and 190 cm long, or 4ft by 6ft 3in. It sits between a single (90 cm) and a double (135 cm) and is common in guest rooms, teenagers' rooms and studio flats where a full double won't fit.

Small doubles catch people out when buying bedding. Small double fitted sheets are harder to find, but a double duvet (200x200 cm) works fine on a small double bed and simply hangs further over the sides.

Is a UK king the same as a US queen?

No. A UK king is 150x200 cm and a US queen is 152x203 cm, so the US queen is 2 cm wider and 3 cm longer. They're close enough that the beds look the same, but US queen sheets will fit a UK king loosely.

The names cause most of the confusion. A US king (193x203 cm) is closer to a UK super king (180x200 cm) but still 13 cm wider. If you're buying a mattress topper or fitted sheet, always go by centimetres rather than the size name, especially on sites that sell both UK and US sizes.

What size is a double fitted sheet?

A UK double fitted sheet is cut to fit a 135x190 cm mattress. Our extra deep double sheet measures 137x190 cm, with the extra 2 cm in width giving the elastic room to grip without straining at the corners.

Depth matters as much as width and length. Measure your mattress from top to bottom, add the thickness of any topper, and pick a sheet with a deeper pocket than the total. Our extra deep fitted sheets have a 40 cm pocket, which covers almost every mattress with a topper on top.

What size is a king size fitted sheet?

A UK king size fitted sheet fits a 150x200 cm mattress. Ours measures 152x200 cm with a 40 cm deep pocket, in 6 colours from white to black.

Here are the fitted sheet sizes we make, matched to the mattress they're cut for:

Bed size Mattress (cm) Our fitted sheet (cm) Pocket depth
Single 90 x 190 91 x 190 40 cm
Double 135 x 190 137 x 190 40 cm
King 150 x 200 152 x 200 40 cm
Super king 180 x 200 180 x 200 40 cm

The bed size also decides your duvet. A double bed takes a 200x200 cm duvet and a king takes a 225x220 cm duvet, both wider than the mattress so they hang down the sides. Our UK duvet size chart matches every duvet to its bed, and our duvet cover sets come in single through to emperor.

If you're adding a topper, our guide to 5 cm vs 10 cm mattress topper thickness explains how much depth each one adds. For pillows, see UK pillow sizes.
