UK duvet sizes in cm, with a chart from single to emperor

2 min read

A UK duvet size is the width and length of the duvet in centimetres, and each size is made wider than its bed so it hangs over the sides. A single duvet is 135x200 cm, a double is 200x200 cm and a king is 225x220 cm. The chart below lists every size, followed by answers on the dimensions people search for most.

Duvet size Duvet (cm) Fits bed (cm) Duvet cover (cm)
Cot bed 120 x 150 70 x 140 120 x 150
Single 135 x 200 90 x 190 137 x 200
Double 200 x 200 135 x 190 204 x 204
King 225 x 220 150 x 200 235 x 225
Super king 260 x 220 180 x 200 265 x 225
Emperor 290 x 235 200 x 200 290 x 235

The cover column shows the sizes of our duvet cover sets. Covers run a few centimetres bigger than the duvet so it slides in easily and doesn't strain the seams.

Is a 200x200 duvet a king size?

No, a 200x200 cm duvet is a UK double, not a king. A UK king duvet is 225x220 cm, which is 25 cm wider and 20 cm longer. A 200x200 duvet on a king bed leaves only 25 cm hanging down each side.

Some European brands label 200x200 cm as a king, which is where the mix-up comes from. On a UK double bed (135 cm wide), a 200x200 duvet gives about 32 cm of drop each side, which is the look most people want.

What size is a 220x225 duvet?

A 220x225 cm duvet is a UK king size. It's the same as the 225x220 cm size, written the other way round, and fits a 150x200 cm king bed with about 37 cm hanging down each side.

Brands write the measurements in different orders, so always check which number is the width. On a king duvet the width is 225 cm and the length is 220 cm.

What size is a 240x220 duvet?

A 240x220 cm duvet is a large king, sold by some European brands as their standard king. It fits a UK king bed with a bigger overhang, but it's 15 cm wider than a UK king duvet, so it bunches up inside a cover made for a 225x220 cm UK king duvet.

If you own a 240x220 duvet, buy a cover marked 240x220, or use a super king cover (ours are 265x225 cm) and accept a little spare room at the sides.

Should a duvet be bigger than the bed?

Yes, a duvet should be bigger than the bed. A UK double duvet is 65 cm wider than a double mattress, which leaves around 30 cm hanging down each side so it covers two people without gaps. Going one size up gives extra drop and stops a duvet-hogging partner leaving you uncovered.

Sizing up works for width but has a catch. A king duvet on a double bed needs a king cover, and it'll hang close to the floor. That's fine with a bed frame and less tidy with a divan.

Our duvets and mattress toppers come in single, double, king and super king, in warmth ratings from 1 to 15 tog. To pick a warmth, see our duvet tog guide for each season. Buying for a cot bed? Our guide to cot bed duvet size covers the 120x150 cm size in detail, and the UK bed sizes chart lists every mattress.
